The 2014 European Congress on Obesity: ISA advocates lifestyle changes as a key for success

Brussels 28 May 2014: The 2014 European Congress on Obesity is an important reminder to people about the obesity epidemic and what must be done to overcome it.

According to the OECD more than half (52%) of the adult population in the European Union is overweight or obese. The reality is that it is more urgent than ever for civil society to recognize the severity of the problem and respond with clear and measurable actions.

The European Congress on Obesity provides an essential platform for discussion on the latest scientific developments in the field and is an important forum that helps drive the debate on how best to address this growing epidemic.

The International Sweeteners Association (ISA) fully supports the objectives of The European Congress on Obesity (28 – 31 May, 2014) and also seeks to help raise awareness about the causes of obesity and ways to address this through small changes to lifestyle.

As part of broader community that is concerned about the increasing risks and dangers associated with obesity, the ISA believes that low calorie sweeteners can play a role in addressing the problem.

Low calorie sweeteners, which can be found in a variety of products including soft drinks, chewing gum, confectionery, frozen desserts, yoghurts, dessert mixes and puddings, are an excellent substitute with the benefit of enabling people to enjoy sweet tastes without calories. Choosing low calorie varieties of products is an easy way of reducing caloric intake and achieving weight loss and weight maintenance.

The ISA fully supports the European Congress on Obesity efforts to mobilise different parts of the community in responding to the one of the fastest developing public health problems of our time. The good news is that Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiometabolic Risk and Prevention can be better managed through informed lifestyle choices. Low calorie sweeteners, together with a balanced diet and exercise can empower people to take control of their wellness.
