American Diabetes Association® Releases 2017 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes. Comprehensive, annual guide includes new and updated recommendations to safeguard the physical and psychological health of people with diabetes. Summary

Nutrition therapy is a fundamental aspect of diabetes care together with other lifestyle modifications including on physical activity levels, smoking cessation, and psychosocial care. Nutrition therapy has an integral role in overall diabetes management, and each person with diabetes should be actively engaged in education, self-management, and treatment planning with his/ her health care team, including the collaborative development of an individualized eating plan. The new ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes provide the most updated nutrition and physical activity recommendations. Regarding the use of low calorie sweeteners in the diet of people with diabetes, ADA states, “For people who are accustomed to sugar-sweetened products, non-nutritive sweeteners have the potential to reduce overall calorie and carbohydrate intake and may be preferred to sugar when consumed in moderation. Regulatory agencies set acceptable daily intake levels for each non-nutritive sweetener, defined as the amount that can be safely consumed over a person’s lifetime.
