Act on obesity today, for all 8 billion
On World Obesity Day (WOD) 2026, the International Sweeteners Association (ISA) joins the global call to address this important health issue, recognising that obesity is a complex condition influenced by biological, social, and environmental factors. This year’s WOD theme ‘8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity’ reminds us that every one of us has a role in building healthier food environments and supporting access to proper prevention and care.
Over 1 billion people are living with obesity worldwide and they should all have access to individualised care, including medical nutrition therapy to improve overall health and quality of life, not only weight outcomes. There is no one-size-fits-all nutrition approach when it comes to weight management. For individuals wishing to enjoy sweet taste while reducing sugar consumption, low/no calorie sweeteners can aid in reducing overall sugar and calorie intake. These alternatives also support the reformulation of foods and drinks, making it easier to opt for healthier options.
As part of this year’s World Obesity Day campaign, the ISA has updated some of its material addressing the role of low/no calorie sweeteners in weight and obesity management:
- Factsheet for healthcare professionals: Obesity and weight control: How can low/no calorie sweeteners help?
- Factsheet for media: Weight control and low/no calorie sweeteners
We encourage everyone to take part in this movement for change and to engage in the online conversation about World Obesity Day 2026 by using #WorldObesityDay, #8BillionReasons and #ISA4WOD.
