ISA is proud to support World Diabetes Day 2013
Building on the 2012 activity, the ISA is proud to support World Diabetes Day on 14th November 2013. Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), World Diabetes Day aims to raise awareness of diabetes among communities across the globe.
More than 371 million people in the world have diabetes, and this number is increasing every day. In addition to medical treatment, dietary and lifestyle changes are essential to manage diabetes successfully – such as, taking regular physical exercise and controlling sugar intake. Through a combination of these strategies people with diabetes can lead normal, happy and healthy lives, and not allow their condition stand in the way of them reaching their dreams.
Featuring two high-profile sports personalities for the education and prevention of diabetes, Prof Greg Whyte, Olympian and celebrity sports scientist, and Gary Mabbutt, former international footballer who has type 1 diabetes, the ISA has issued a video entitled “Sporting Success – Tackling diabetes through physical activity”, which demonstrated that everyone can successfully manage their diabetes and achieve success in sports. With this in mind, sticking to a healthy and balanced diet and doing regular exercise is key to live healthily for everyone, including diabetic people. The 2013 World Diabetes Day ISA support video can be found here below or in our video channel.
By effectively managing their diabetes, people can achieve great things in sports, and maintain healthy, active lifestyles. Moreover, lack of physical activity is one of the main risk factors in developing diabetes later in life – just 30 minutes of exercise a day can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 40%.
The ISA supports physical exercise for all.
