Weight Control

Overweight and obesity is becoming an ever-increasing problem in today’s society. In many countries, more than 50% of the population is now overweight. The implications for national health systems are enormous. WHO, European policy makers and national health authorities are taking wide-ranging measures and have asked the food industry to contribute to the global fight against overweight and obesity. This is a request ISA fully supports. A combination of a balanced diet, smaller portions and physical activity is a necessity to overcome overweight and obesity. ISA believes low-calorie sweeteners can play an important role in fighting the problem of overweight by helping consumers reduce their energy intake without compromising on taste and without giving up their natural desire for a sweet taste.

Low-calorie sweeteners approved and authorised for use in the EU are safe and give people the opportunity to enjoy a sweet taste without adding any calories to their diet. Low-calorie sweeteners, either as ingredients in foodstuffs or as table-top products, can help consumers who seek energy and sugar reduction as part of a new, healthy and balanced diet. Substituting low-calorie sweeteners for sugar offers an effective, quick and inexpensive method of reducing energy intake. This, coupled with other recognized methods of weight control such as smaller portions and more physical activity, can begin to make an impact against the problem of obesity and overweight in today’s world.

The International Sweeteners Association has produced an informative presentation entitled “The Role Sweeteners Can Play in Today’s World” which addresses the Overweight and Obese issue and explains how low-calorie sweeteners can help in controlling this growing problem. This is a presentation that would be of interest to many audiences including schools, health clubs, slimming clubs, diabetic associations, etc.
